Thereafter, transfer to Udawalawe and visit the Elephant Transit Home (ETH).
The Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home, also known as the Udawalawe Elephant Orphanage, was established to rehabilitate and release orphaned baby elephants into the wild. In 1995, the Ministry of Wildlife Conservation took an important step in protecting orphaned elephants, resulting in the creation of “Ath Athuru Sevana” (Elephant Transit Home) within Udawalawe National Park. The ETH cares for orphaned elephant calves until they are independent and ready to return to their natural habitat. While the initiative initially faced skepticism from some conservationists, it has since gained widespread public support and continues to play a vital role in elephant conservation.
After enjoying a morning packed breakfast, transfer to Udawalawe National Park for a jeep safari at 06:00 hrs.
Udawalawe National Park lies on the boundary of Sabaragamuwa and Uva Provinces in Sri Lanka. The park was created to provide a sanctuary for wild animals displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir on the Walawe River, and to protect the reservoir’s catchment area. Covering 30,821 hectares (119 sq. mi), it was officially established on 30 June 1972. Prior to its designation as a national park, the area was used for shifting cultivation (chena farming), and the farmers were gradually relocated once the park was declared. Located 165 kilometres (103 mi) from Colombo, Udawalawe is an important habitat for water birds and Sri Lankan elephants, making it the third most visited national park in the country.
