Originally a small seaport, it rose to prominence in the 16th century with the arrival of the Portuguese in 1505, and its development as a major harbor continued under the British. Colombo became the capital of Sri Lanka in 1815 after the annexation of the Kandyan Kingdom. The Temple of the Tooth Relic houses one of Sri Lanka’s most sacred Buddhist relics. When King Wimaladharmasuriya I (1592–1604 A.D.) became king, he recovered the Tooth Relic, which had been hidden for over 44 years at the Delgomuwa Buddhist Temple in Kuruwita. He brought it to Kandy in a grand procession. The first temple was built next to the Royal Palace by King Wimaladharmasuriya I, but it was later destroyed by the Portuguese. Subsequent kings—Wimaladharmasuriya II (1687–1707) and Narendra Singhe (1707–1739 A.D.)—reconstructed the temple, with the current structure likely dating from King Narendra Singhe’s era. The outer walls feature 32 beautifully painted Jataka Stories.
