The Temple of the Tooth Relic has a fascinating history. When King Wimaladharmasuriya I (1592–1604 A.D.) ascended the throne in Kandy, he sought the Buddha’s Tooth Relic and Bowl Relic, which had been kept at the Delgomuwa Buddhist Temple in Kuruwita for more than 44 years, hidden in a grinding stone. The king personally retrieved the Sacred Tooth Relic and brought it to Kandy in a ceremonial procession.
The first Temple of the Tooth Relic was constructed by Wimaladharmasuriya I next to the Royal Palace. The Portuguese later burned down the two-story building, and King Wimaladharmasuriya II (1687–1707) erected a three-story structure to house the relic. After another fire, King Narendra Singhe (1707–1739 A.D.) constructed the two-story building that largely stands today. He also painted 32 Jataka stories on the outer walls of the temple.
