Visit Sigiriya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Sri Lanka’s most remarkable wonders. Often called Lion Rock, this breathtaking 5th-century “Fortress in the Sky” features the remnants of a grand royal palace perched atop a towering 600-foot rock. At the summit, explore the foundations of the ancient palace, water tanks, and guardhouses. The ascent reveals a treasure trove of historical marvels, including stunning frescoes of 21 life-sized damsels, the only surviving examples of ancient Sinhala secular painting. Passikudah is a picturesque fishing village located along the lagoon-enclosed east coast of Sri Lanka. Koggala Stilt Fishing Experience
At Koggala, witness the fascinating tradition of stilt fishing, where fishermen balance on a vertical pole with a horizontal crossbar, perched a few meters above the water, using a hand-held rod and line. This ancient practice, now a major tourist attraction, requires immense patience, as fishermen often sit for hours—typically in the early morning or late afternoon—waiting for fish swimming close to shore. Their low height prevents casting large shadows, minimizing the chance of scaring the fish.
Galle City Tour
Afterwards, commence a city tour of Galle, including the Galle Dutch Fort and Clock Tower. Explore this historic coastal city, focusing on the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Galle Fort, with its colonial architecture, ramparts, lighthouse, and local shops, including the Old Dutch Hospital. Many tours also feature nearby attractions such as sea turtle hatcheries, gem museums, and beaches like Unawatuna.
Koggala is also known for its turtle conservation projects. Sri Lanka is home to five sea turtle species: Green turtle, Olive Ridley turtle, Hawksbill turtle, Loggerhead turtle, and Leatherback turtle. The Hawksbill turtle is particularly distinctive, with a tapered, hawk-like head, V-shaped lower jaw, and a mottled shell with serrated edges.
